PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration & Leadership Residency; ASHP-accredited

Purpose Statement

The PGY2 health system pharmacy administration and leadership (HSPAL) residency program at Abbott Northwestern Hospital builds upon PGY1 residency graduates' competence in the delivery of patient-centered care and in pharmacy operational services to prepare residents who can assume high level managerial, supervisory, and leadership responsibilities. The residency program lays the foundation for continued growth in management and leadership skills. Upon graduation, residents are prepared for a clinical or operational management/supervisory role in a variety of work settings.

Program Description

The HSPAL program at Abbott Northwestern Hospital provides the resident with the skills and knowledge required to become a competent pharmacy leader. Individuals fulfilling the standards of the PGY2 HSPAL Residency Program will be prepared to secure a leadership role in health-system pharmacy. A variety of pharmacy administration rotations are offered to give the residents exposure to a wide array of health system pharmacy administration experiences across the continuum of care.  Areas of competence emphasized during the program include safe and effective medication-use systems, quality assurance and improvement, the management of human resources, the management of financial resources, use of technology, and advanced leadership. The resident serves as a member of the hospital site’s pharmacy management team, as well as the health system pharmacy enterprise leadership team.

Program Structure

The program is a twelve-month, postgraduate training experience composed of the following major elements:

  • Hospital site leadership team member (clinical, operations, departmental leadership)
  • Hospital site management training (direct supervision of designated pharmacy staff)
  • Health system pharmacy leadership (regional site leadership, corporate support services, and other electives)
  • Interprofessional healthcare team membership (hospital, health system committees as directed)

The specific program for each resident varies based upon residents’ goals, interests, and previous experience.  However, all residents are required to complete rotations in core subject areas considered to be essential to the pharmacy practitioner.  Elective rotations are available to permit the resident flexibility in pursing individual goals.

Additional learning experiences aimed at producing a well-rounded pharmacist include the development and completion of a major project related to pharmacy practice, development of oral and written communication skills, participation in various departmental administrative committees, and practice in various pharmacy areas throughout the institution.  Upon successful completion of the program, trainees are awarded a residency certificate.
