Purpose Statement

PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

Program Description

The PGY1 Residency Program at Abbott Northwestern is both flexible and focused. Residents develop skills in the provision of patient-centered care, service excellence, practice management and leadership. The pharmacy practice model combines decentralized pharmacist practice with responsibility for a drug distribution system that leverages automated dispensing cabinets and a sterile compounding facility.

Residents interact with numerous pharmacist practitioners specialized in clinical pharmacy, informatics, logistics and leadership. Residents gain valuable experience by preparing and presenting educational programs, participating in multidisciplinary patient care rounds, staffing, teaching students and completing a major research project.

Upon completion of the residency, each pharmacist will demonstrate a general practitioner and leadership and skill set. Moreover, each resident will have experienced a variety of specialty practices that will set the stage for career planning or further training. Residents will develop their own preceptor skills through their presentation experiences and student teaching. Finally, each resident will be exposed to the why and how of pharmacy practice program development and practice changes.

Staffing

Each resident staffs a decentral practice area or central pharmacy every third weekend and one weekday evening every three weeks following completion of introductory training through the end of the residency year. Also, each resident will work three of six observed holidays. Decentral teams for weekend staffing experience include:

Prerequisites

• Doctor of pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy or a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Committee (FPGEC) certificate from NABP
• Licensure as a Minnesota pharmacist no later than August 1
• Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer. No sponsorship is available for this position.
