Pharmacy Residency Program

Abbott Northwestern Hospital

The Abbott Northwestern Pharmacy Residency Program provides residents with skill development in basic and specialized patient-centered care, service excellence, practice management and leadership. Pharmacy practice is decentralized, supported by an Epic electronic health record and a medication distribution system of automated dispensing cabinets through which over 90 percent of medication doses are supplied.

Residents interact with dozens of pharmacists with skills in a variety of clinical pharmacy specialties, management and leadership. Residents gain valuable experience by participating in multidisciplinary patient care rounds, medication use assessments, preparing and presenting educational programs, staffing and completing a major research project. Residents are involved in student instruction through teaching assistant assignments at the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy as well as precepting of APPE/IPPE students in the hospital.

Abbott Northwestern is ranked #1 in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metro area and #2 in Minnesota for the tenth year in a row in the 2022-23 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings.
