Summer nurse internship

Allina Health offers a paid, ten week, summer internship to students currently enrolled in an accredited baccalaureate RN nursing program. The summer internship is a pre-licensure program, so unfortunately those with an RN license are not eligible. Together with your assigned RN preceptor(s), interns will provide care that is whole person, patient centered, collaborative in nature and exceptional in quality. The internship is an excellent opportunity to gain experience, increase confidence and receive preference for employment upon graduation.

There are a wide variety of units within the Allina Health system that hire summer interns, such as: medical surgical, cardiac telemetry, vascular, oncology, neuroscience, orthopedics, spine, acute rehab, observation, mental health, stepdown/progressive care units and float pool. Every effort is made to help you get into the clinical setting that matches your career goals, but please note the intensive care unit, operating room, emergency department and mother baby areas hire very few interns. Allina does not have neonatal, pediatric, special care nursery, burn, plastics, or trauma units. Interns will be hired for a specific location and patient care area (for example: Med Surg at Mercy) for the duration of the summer, which will be determined at the time of a job offer. The majority of internships will be offered at our Twin Cities Metro hospitals (listed below) but there may also be internships at our community hospitals or other locations.

The summer internship is ten weeks in length, and is a 0.8 FTE for a summer total of 320 hours. The interns’ work schedule will match that of their assigned preceptor(s), including weekends if their preceptor(s) work weekends. Interns will work no more than 40 hours in one week, and no more than 64 hours in a 2-week pay period. Interns may work any of the following: day shifts (7:00 AM-3:30 PM), evening shifts (3:00 PM-11:30 PM), night shifts (11:00 PM-7:30 AM), rotating day/evening shifts, rotating day/night shifts, rotating evening/night shifts, rotating day/evening/night shifts, 8 hour shifts or 12 hour shifts. Interns will not be scheduled to work on July 4. Interns are expected to participate in the full ten week program. It is a commitment, and you’ll be hired to work any shift any day. Please ensure you do not plan vacations or have other employment/schooling that may interfere with your internship schedule. Your preceptor(s) will reach out to you in the month of May regarding what their (and coincidentally your) schedule will look like for the summer.

Additional Application Requirements: On the application you will indicate your preferences for location and patient care area, which will also be discussed in greater detail later in the process. By applying, you will be considered for all nurse internship opportunities within the Allina system. Please read the requirements carefully, have ready and attach all pertinent information with your application materials (i.e. resume, essay, etc.) because our application system does not allow making modifications/editing an already submitted application. It is recommended that you list month and year of graduation, work experience, internships and volunteer experiences on resumes.

After submitting an application, each application is reviewed in further detail. Those moving forward will be contacted directly by our Talent Acquisition Team and scheduled for an interview (to be conducted via phone) to discuss your application and interests in more detail. Feedback is collected and those advancing will receive a verbal job offer from a nurse recruiter at Allina with details of the internship. Verbal job offers typically begin on or around February 1st. 

Yes- in order to function as a student nurse, being actively enrolled and participating in a nursing internship course through a Minnesota school is required of all interns. It is a state statue and patient safeguard. Additional information will be provided during the hiring process.
