RN new graduate

Allina Health believes the best way to provide safe and compassionate care for our patients is by nurturing the passion of those who care for them. We hire and invest in new nurses with resources to help you grow and thrive and are dedicated to supporting you with a precepted orientation.

There are a wide variety of patient care units within the Allina Health system that regularly hire new grad RNs, such as: medical surgical, cardiac telemetry, vascular, oncology, neuroscience, orthopedics, spine, inpatient rehabilitation, observation, mental health, ICU stepdown/progressive care units and float pool. Our intensive care units, emergency departments and mother baby areas also hire new grads with experience in those respective areas depending on position availability. We do not have neonatal, pediatric, burn, plastics, or special care nursery units. The majority of new RNs are hired at our Twin Cities Metro hospitals (listed below) but there may also be internships at our community hospitals or other locations.

The work schedule details are determined at the time of a job offer and are dependent on what positions are available at that time, but, as a new nurse in the hospital setting expect that you will likely be working:

  • Night shifts (11:00 PM-7:30 AM) – it may be straight nights or a day/night rotation. There is a night shift differential on top of base pay. The shifts are typically eight hours.
  • 0.8 FTE (which is 64 hours in a 2-week pay period), but it may be slightly more or slightly less than that.
  • Every other weekend.

We define a new graduate as a registered nurse with less than 1 year of RN work experience. We have one application for new grads: RN New Graduate application (#R-0000016). By applying, you will be considered for all RN positions within the Allina system that hire new grads. On the application, you will indicate your preferences for location and patient care area, which will also be discussed in greater detail later in the process. It is recommended that new grad RNs apply up to 4 months prior to graduation (and anytime thereafter, there is no deadline). We hire new graduates year-round depending on available positions.

RN New Graduate application

Each application is reviewed in further detail. Those moving forward will be contacted directly by our Talent Acquisition Team and scheduled to interview for further discussion on your application and interests. Feedback is collected and those advancing will receive a verbal job offer from a nurse recruiter at Allina with details of the position. Offers can be (and many times are) received prior to graduation.
