So-called integrative therapies reduced self-reported pain levels by 47 percent and cut anxiety levels by 56 percent for cancer patients at Allina’s Abbott Northwestern Hospital . The Abbott study is the largest of its kind for cancer patients and was set for publication Tuesday in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute Monographs .

While acknowledging that one error is too many, hospital officials said patients are safer than they were 10 years ago when Minnesota first started publicly listing hospitals that committed any of 28 adverse events, also known as “never events” because they are considered preventable. Surgeries to the wrong body part, for example, declined from 31 three years ago to 17 last year.

Penny Wheeler, chief clinical officer for Allina Health , said this approach to health care, forming a team around a patient and giving them someone to make sure nothing is lost in the shuffle, means a few positions are in high demand. Primary care doctors, for one.
