Allina Health in Minneapolis received the Quality and Patient Safety Improvement Award in the large hospital category, which recognizes hospitals that have taken extraordinary and innovative steps to make patient safety a top priority throughout the hospital.

Faster identification and treatment of sepsis by Allina Health hospitals in Minnesota has reduced deaths from the infection-related condition. Doctors and nurses at Allina started re-examining how they treat sepsis in 2014, after being dismayed at the number of deaths and learning that the condition was three times more lethal than strokes and heart attacks.

Health Catalyst, a data analytics provider to hospitals, has raised $100 million in debt and equity financing, tipping the Salt Lake City startup’s valuation to more than $1 billion, the company announced. Hospitals use Health Catalyst’s software to link the data that they already have housed in a number of siloed databases, like the ones used to track insurance claims, patient satisfaction and, of course, the electronic health record.

Allina Health is placing restrictions on visitors to its hospitals, after state health officials declared influenza widespread in Minnesota. Beginning Wednesday, children under age 5 and sick people will not be allowed to visit hospitalized patients.

While acknowledging that one error is too many, hospital officials said patients are safer than they were 10 years ago when Minnesota first started publicly listing hospitals that committed any of 28 adverse events, also known as “never events” because they are considered preventable. Surgeries to the wrong body part, for example, declined from 31 three years ago to 17 last year.

But, as tempting as it would be to remove the obstruction and prevent it from causing the next heart attack, Mooney follows advice from leading medical authorities to leave it and exit his patient’s circulatory system as quickly as possible.

Five patients — with three new knees and two new hips among them — were rolled into a dimmed, windowless room at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis for group acupuncture. None had received the treatment before, but Cynthia Miller, a clinical acupuncturist, quickly had thin needles protruding from precise points in their feet, ankles, arms and ears to ease their joint pain.

No patients in Minnesota hospitals died from falls last year — a first for the state since it started publicly reporting preventable hospital errors six years ago. Health officials said the decrease — down from 10 fall-related deaths in the previous reporting period — was a remarkable achievement that required the cooperation and creativity of many hospitals in the state.
