Allina Health’s long-running Heart of New Ulm project is unique nationally in proving that a communitywide focus, led by a local hospital, could improve cardiac health. Allina invested $9 million in the 10-year project, which reduced the number of residents with high cholesterol, hypertension and smoking habits in New Ulm — a town known for the beers and brats of its Oktoberfest.

The Heart of New Ulm Project , the effort of Allina Health and the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation , proved that a town known for beer and brats could improve its cardiovascular fitness if residents received guidance and support to eat better, exercise more and make better use of medical care. Blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels have all improved since 2009 in a target population of New Ulm adults, according to study results released this May.

After five years, results indicate that The Heart of New Ulm Project (HONU) is having a positive impact. The percentage of people who had normal blood pressure increased from 79% to 86%, while the percentage of those with total cholesterol under 200 increased from 59% to 64%.

Hearts Beat Back: The Heart of New Ulm Project has launched its newest community health challenge, "Lose it to Win it: Weigh in, New Ulm." The free 12-month community health challenge is designed to help the community members lose weight or maintain weight and provide an opportunity to be rewarded for making healthful lifestyle choices. The community prize that can be earned is $100,000 worth of new outdoor fitness equipment for New Ulm parks and bicycle improvements such as bicycle racks, bicycle lanes and signage.
