Doctors and nurses at Allina started re-examining how they treat sepsis in 2014, after being dismayed at the number of deaths and learning that the condition was three times more lethal than strokes and heart attacks.

[Forbes, February 07, 2019]   Health Catalyst, a data analytics provider to hospitals, has raised $100 million in debt and equity financing, tipping the Salt Lake City startup’s valuation to more than $1 billion, the company announced. Hospitals use Health Catalyst’s software to link the data that they already have housed in a number of siloed databases, like the ones used to track insurance claims, patient satisfaction and, of course, the electronic health record.

[Star Tribune, January 01, 0001]   Allina Health is merging under one license two acute care hospitals in Anoka County, as the Minneapolis-based system tries to eliminate duplicate services at the nearby medical centers. Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids and Unity Hospital in Fridley will continue distinct operations, but the smaller medical center in Fridley next year will take the name “Mercy Hospital — Unity Campus.” Read more at startribune.com .

Even so, the decision on the part of senior leaders at the 13-hospital, 90-clinic, 26,000-employee Allina to commit to achieving exceptional outcomes—senior executives strove to be in the top decile of performance on every meaningful, measurable quality metric—was ambitious enough to give the project a semifinalist award in this year’s Healthcare Informatics Innovator Awards program.
