Helping high school footballers deal with heat and humidity

[KARE11, August 09, 2011] Since late July, five young football players in Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina have died and heat is suspected in their deaths. Those cases have renewed calls for more stringent standards on practices during the summer months.

Brent Millikin, an Allina sports medicine specialist and head of the Minnesota Athletic Trainer's Association, wants to make sure kids won't be afraid to speak up if they notice they're not feeling well.

"If they don't feel good, starting to feel 'nauzy' or dizzy or they're getting some muscle cramps; those are early signs of heat issues and that needs to be addressed and reported to their coaches."
