Cambridge Medical Center's expanded Mental Health and Addiction Services receives state license

CAMBRIDGE, Minn. 12/12/2018  The integrated and expanded mental health and addiction services at Cambridge Medical Center, part of Allina Health, has been formally licensed by the Minnesota Department of Human Service. The expanded services mean community members experiencing addiction and mental health conditions can get more of their needs met in one place.

For patients who only need addiction treatment services, our long-time, robust outpatient addiction treatment program remains available. Our additional mental health services mean patients who come to the Cambridge Medical Center with a primary diagnosis of addiction and a secondary diagnosis of a mental health condition can be treated for both disorders at the same time.

"At Allina Health and Cambridge Medical Center we recognize having an integrated addiction treatment and mental health program available in one location is important because a majority of people who experience an addiction also have a mental health condition," said Cambridge Medical Center President Gary Shaw. "These patients don’t need to go multiple places for services or try to treat two related conditions separately. Integrated services is the evidence based best practice model which increases the rate of success for those suffering from addiction and mental health conditions."

In order to enhance the continuum of care and fill a gap in the current options in the area, Cambridge Medical Center has also expanded its Intensive Outpatient Addiction program. This program offers a therapeutic approach to addiction and mental health through group therapy, education and exercises to address emotional, physical, spiritual and relationship concerns. Patients build a recovery plan for a healthy life, and are encouraged to participate in community support organizations and recreational and spiritual activities.

Also new to our addiction program are the following services:
   - family and couples therapy as part of our expanded mental health services
   - service care coordinators that can support people with placement in inpatient addiction programs, help them navigate health and community systems, and connect them with community and support resources
   - individual comprehensive addiction assessments in the community, so people don’t have to travel to Cambridge Medical Center to get that
   - a nurse practitioner who can prescribe medications related to treatment as needed.
